From Nathan Allen,
Artistic Director of The House:

The impact Eileen LaCario and Tony D’Angelo have had on my life, my family, and my work, cannot be overstated. These wonderful people entered my world when The House Theatre of Chicago, where I am Artistic Director, won the inaugural “Broadway in Chicago Emerging Theatre Award” in 2007. The House was young, I was young, and I had no idea how transformative this introduction would be.

To call them mentors wouldn’t really cover it. They were more like surrogate parents. They produced the commercial run of The Sparrow, one of the most important pieces in The House’s history. But they also welcomed me to their dining table where I learned that you can both be and artist and have the happy life we all strive for. For me, they reframed the definition of success. I’m not rich and famous, but I have a career in the community I care about. I have a wonderful wife, two brilliant children, and a home to call my own.

That’s why I’m so excited to recognize Eileen and Tony by naming the scene shop at The House’s new headquarters after them. When I let her know, Eileen told me this is an especially touching honor because she and Tony first met in the scene shop of the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse.

As The House looks forward to its third decade, I’m so glad to know that the artists who work in our building will see their names and hear the stories of how they made The House what it is today. After all, this building would never have been possible without them.

One of the most important lessons Eileen taught me was that “you can have whatever it is you want, you just have to go and get it yourself.” She’s right. But it sure helps to have people like Eileen and Tony to help you along the way.

Thank you,

Nathan Allen
