World Premiere Play

A ferocious sci-fi thriller!

The tower comes alive as the team begins its ascent of the Blood Spire.

Childe takes control (and a major risk) as they ascend the Blood Spire.

"Massively ambitious and hugely distinctive new show"
Chicago Tribune

"Reliably entertaining and conspicuously frightening"
Chicago Reader

Follow a 26th-century team of scientists and soldiers as they investigate a mysterious alien tower bent on brutally punishing all who enter it. Uncovering clues and solving puzzles, each crusader will face unthinkable sacrifice. Blood will spill, but what reward awaits them at the top?

The House teams up with our most inventive designers and guest artists to bring this unique universe to life. Body modification is the norm in the future, and award-winning puppet designer Mary Robinette Kowal, (who doubles down on her geek cred as a Hugo award-winning sci-fi author!!), articulates and re-shapes the actors’ human forms into powerful mechanized players battling for their lives and souls.

Reynolds is one of a new generation of hard science-fiction authors, a craft he began after leaving his position as an astrophysicist with the European Space Agency. Diamond Dogs is a pure example of the "Deadly Maze Story," a staple of Science Fiction since H. P. Lovecraft. This world premiere production at The House Theatre of Chicago marks the first of Reynolds' works to be adapted for another medium. More at alastairreynolds.com!

A modern twist down the yellow brick road

First produced by The House in Season 3, this is our modern retelling of the classic American fairy tale.

A twister lands our teenage Dorothy and her house in Munchkinland. Right on top of a wicked witch.  Her phone won't work, her dog is scared, and she's desperate to get home to what little family she has left.  But the town's residents are gleefully celebrating Dorothy's powers as the fabled Witch Slayer. When Glinda and the munchkins can't convince her to stick around and be their new hero, they send her off on the road of yellow brick wearing magical boots soaked in the red blood of the slain witch. A favor from the fabled all-powerful Wizard will be her only chance to get out of Oz.

Unsure about her path forward, Dorothy teams up with a one-day-old Scarecrow, a heartbroken Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion. Her boots, and their friendships, guard against lots of danger on their way to the Emerald City. But the Wizard will ask the Witch Slayer to live up to her violent and vengeful new name in exchange for a return ticket to her old life.  If she can get home, Kansas may never be the same.

The creatures of Oz come to life with puppets large and small by Jesse Mooney-Bullock (The Hammer Trinity), and music from company member Kevin O'Donnell. With fighting monkeys flying in the air overhead, and enveloping projections on all sides of the theatre, you will walk right alongside Dorothy on this adventure.
